“We almost died out there in the ocean.
We had only one choice: survive...”

A True Story of Survival and the American Dream

From Refugee to a Global Recycling Empire

When Saigon fell in 1975, one family risked everything for freedom. They fled across the open sea with nothing but faith and a will to survive. From those impossible beginnings rose a story that would inspire generations, a story about courage, forgiveness, and rebuilding from nothing.

Watch the Official Trailer

The King of Trash is a feature documentary directed by Oscar-winning cinematographer Errol Webber, telling the extraordinary true story of David Duong and his family, Vietnamese refugees who lost everything after the fall of Saigon and rebuilt their lives from nothing in America.

What began as a fight for survival became a story of vision, resilience, and renewal. From collecting recyclables on San Francisco’s streets to founding California Waste Solutions and Vietnam Waste Solutions, the Duong family transformed loss into purpose and waste into opportunity. This is not just a refugee story. It’s a story about the American Dream, about building bridges between nations, and about finding humanity in what the world throws away.

“We came to this country with nothing but hope. Everything we built came from hard work and faith.”

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

When I met the Duong family, I saw a story that reached far beyond business or success, a story about endurance, faith, and the quiet power of rebuilding a life from nothing. The King of Trash is a portrait of hope rising from loss, of a family who turned pain into purpose and created light from what others left behind. Their journey reminds us that the American Dream is not defined by what we achieve, but by the humanity we share and the legacy we choose to build.
